Milk Glass & Carnations

Milk glass is all the rage this year. If you are a wedding blogger/website stalker like myself, I know you have seen this trend all over the place. Milk glass is great for a bride on a budget. For one, I have found this great DIY Milk Glass project (from Marry You Me via Ruffled) that will save you tons of money and with stores like the Salvation Army/Goodwill, Homegoods, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. You are sure to fine amazing deals. Using white decor on your table is fine especially if you add some color in the form of inexpensive flowers like carnations. Carnations are a relatively inexpensive flower that most people do not want to use.
Type of Table:
I think the Milk Glass & Carnation centerpieces will look best when using a square or rectangular table. On a rectangular table this is allow you to place the vases across the table (right to left) creating a faux table runner. While using a square table will allow you to place the centerpieces in a plus sign (+) design.
The centerpieces can be created above with the following items:
· Bunches of Carnations (total number varies depending on size your creating.)
· Floral Foam Cylinder
· Spray Paint (Try to match your spray paint color to the color of your flowers)
· Glue Gun
· Glue Stick
Costs:
- Carnations $48.16 (via The Flower Exchange for 8 bunches of carnations. Each bunch comes with 10 stems and 8 bunches comes in a box so that equals 80 stems per box. I suggest you do a trial run first so you know how many you will need. However, for now let's say we need 1,060 stems totaling $626.08 for 50 vases)
- Floral Foam Cylinder $32.04 for 1 Box of 36 (via Barbara's Gardens... Price quoted for the 6" cylinder of course you will have to use your own judgment.)
- Spray Paint $6.00 (via Your Local Craft Store ie. Michaels, AC Moore, etc. Click here for coupons to Michaels & AC Moore.)
How to create:
Step 1: Begin to push carnation stems into floral foam cylinder until the entire foam is cover. Remember to leave some space open at the bottom in order to attach the milk glass vase at a later time.
Step 2: Using a straw attachment to your spray paint can fill any spots where you can see the green foam if necessary.
Step 3: Pre-heat glue gun with glue stick attached.
Step 4: Apply a layer of glue to the rim of the milk glass vase.
Step 5: Attach the carnation filled floral foam cylinder until it is secured tightly.
Total cost for 10 rectangular tables creating 50 vases:
· Carnation Flowers: 13 Boxes of Carnations (1,060 carnation stems) at $626.08
· Floral Foam Cylinder: 2 Boxes for 72 at $64.08
· Milk Glass for: 50 vases at $150 (I would limit my spending to about $150 including shipping)
· Spray Paint: 1 can of spray paint at $6.00
· Glue Gun : 1 Glue Gun at $3.99
· Glue Sticks: 1 bag of glue sticks at $2.00
Giving us a grand total of $852.15 divided by 50 centerpieces equals $17.04 per centerpiece.
Viola!!
Now you have amazing centerpieces that can double as favors for your guests. Nothing like killing two birds with one stone. And what are you going to do with 50 white glass vases anyway. You may even have carnations left over that you can have placed on your wedding cake or create boutonnieres for your groomsmen.
