Trying to decide what to save vs. splurge on during a wedding is a personal choice every couple has to make. You have to decide what items are most important to you and your fiance and then set the budget from there.
Photography is one thing I highly recommend all brides splurge on. After your wedding is over, the pictures will be the one thing you have to look back on to remember your wedding day. Take your time to find the perfect photographer for you. Now, the perfect photographer doesn't have to be the most expensive one. In my case, our photographer was actually the cheapest one we met with and we really hit it off. If you can't find one in your price point though, I would highly recommend pulling a little extra money from somewhere else in your budget to find the right photographer for you.
Another area I recommend splurging on is food. After a wedding, most guests will remember whether your food was delicious or whether it was like chewing on a shoe. Of course you want your guests to remember your wedding in a good way, so having a great meal will definitely set the standard for that. A good meal doesn't have to be a 3 course sit down meal. You can have a buffet that is just as delicious! A buffet can sometimes be more expensive than a sit down meal though, so make sure to do your research.
Now I had to splurge on our venue because we don't have too many choices in good ole' Tallahassee. I wish we would have been able to find a cheaper venue so we could have spent more money in other areas, but sadly that wasn't not an option if I wanted to get married in town.
Now for those of you who are in an area that has a lot of options for wedding venues, I would recommend you don't spend thousands of dollars on a wedding venue. There are so many different choices of locations that you should be able to find something perfect for your wedding your budget. Check out parks, VFW halls, church reception halls, and places like that for a venue for your wedding. They are often relatively cheap (and sometimes free!) to use and let you bring in your own caterer.
Of course I want you to look gorgeous on your wedding day, but you don't need to buy a $5000 dress to look gorgeous. Even if you don't want to buy a dress at David's Bridal, you can still find the perfect dress for you in your price range. Lots of bridal boutiques have sample sales where you can buy off the rack dresses for a huge discount! You can also buy used dresses online that are normally in fantastic condition since they've only been worn once.
Also, you can check out sites like Rue La La, who offer wedding boutiques every few months. You can often find designer wedding dresses for only a few hundred dollars!
Now speaking of Rue La La, they're doing another "Style! I Do" boutique on April 25th. The boutique starts at 11am and only runs for 48 hours. This boutique will feature designers like Badgley Mischka, Nicole Miller, and Jenny Yoo. If you see something you like, you have to be quick though because things sell out quick!
Here's a sneak peek of some of the dresses they're offering during the boutique:
