If the holiday season brought you a shiny token of love and commitment to wear on your ring finger, congratulations on your engagement! But, as some of us who have accidentally misplaced our engagement/wedding rings will tell you, once it’s off your finger and nowhere in sight, it’s automatic panic mode! But, thankfully we have found a solution to ensure that panic, anxiety, and distress are out of your hands and into Jewelers Mutual’s who will ensure a peace of mind during a stressful and devastating loss of the most emotional and financial asset you own. But, before we let you in on our treasure we like to call, Jewelers Mutual, we would like to thank Kate Wenzel Photography for submitting one of the most romantic engagement sessions that has ever landed in our inbox.

Now that you have your engagement ring and would like to shout pure joy from the rooftops, you may want to be a bit more precautious as with newly engaged brides-to-be, ring loss can be more prevalent as many may not have their ring correctly sized yet. While showing new bling off to friends and family is a fun and important rite of passage, getting the ring fitted specifically for you may be the best way to keep track of it. A ring that is too big can slide off without you even noticing it’s gone and by then it will often be too late to locate it. And like many who mistakenly believe that as long as they keep their jewelry out of extraordinary situations it won’t be lost, you’re probably thinking it’ll never happen to you, but the truth is no one intends to lose their most valuable jewelry but unfortunately accidents happen all the time, in fact, according to claims received by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, accidental loss of a stone or the whole ring accounted for over 65% of all claims in 2013.
Finding the appropriate insurance for your jewelry will alleviate the distress and anxiety associated with even the most extreme cases of loss. There are a variety of companies with whom to insure jewelry, and costs can be similar among them. Some homeowners insurance policies may even cover your jewelry. However, coverage can vary a great deal. Moral of the story? Do your research and make sure you’re covered in the event of any loss!
If you’re wondering how it works, here it is… Standard non-scheduled homeowners or renters policies do not automatically include coverage for this type of loss, but Jewelers Mutual does and what’s more is the insurance you receive for the cost to repair or replace damaged rings and gemstones; another area where insurance coverage can fall short.”
Given how easily a loss may occur coupled with the financial expense of replacing the piece, protecting your jewelry is crucial. According to Jewelers Mutual, damage and loss can account for nearly 90 percent of all claims in a single year while theft and burglary account for the other 10%. A common claim is “mysterious disappearance,” in other words someone is unsure whether his or her jewelry was stolen or lost. When pursuing jewelry insurance, a key thing to look for is whether or not the policy covers mysterious disappearance, as many do not.
These days we have insurance on our cars, homes, and even phones so it only makes sense to insure one of the most emotional and financial assets of your life, your ring. “Insurance costs approximately $1 to $3 per $100 of value, depending on the location where the jewelry will be kept, deductible, security, etc. It is a cost everyone should build into their budget during purchases of valuable jewelry items like weddings.. Sites like Jewelers Mutual’s PerfectCircleInsurance.com offer handy premium calculators so you can easily get a quote.”
Keep your jewelry sparkling for a lifetime
Jewelry is made to be enjoyed, and a little extra care will help extend that enjoyment for a lifetime. And if you pass it on to a family member one day, maybe several lifetimes. Use these jewelry care tips to maintain the shine and sparkle and keep stones safely in their settings.
- Get checkups. At least once a year, take your jewelry to a jeweler for inspection and cleaning. They’ll check for loose settings, faulty links, worn prongs, and other potential problems. Ask for tips on how to clean your jewelry at home between visits.
- Clean regularly. Clean your jewelry at home frequently to avoid dirt build up that can increase wear.
- Don’t wait. If you see a prong that’s loose, worn, or catches on fabric, it could lead to a lost diamond. Take the piece to your jeweler and have it checked immediately.
- Store jewelry gently. When you’re not wearing your jewelry, place each item in a separate soft compartment or container. Storing jewelry cluttered together can cause scratches.
- Go easy. Diamonds are among the hardest materials on earth, but they can chip if struck at the right angle. Don’t risk a damaged engagement ring. For any potentially high-impact activity, store your ring safely in the sidelines.
With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, no matter how lucky you think you are, insure your jewelry and don’t test your luck!
From the photographer… “Laughter & Love. These two laugh constantly and love fully. They bring a sense of balance and compliment one another in every way. Brian makes Danielle laugh and Brian loves it. The way they feel about one another is obvious; whenever they lock eyes they light up. I found myself laughing so hard I had to consciously remember to hold the camera steady. This has never happened during a session. The results were wonderful- an authentic capture of two authentic people showcasing their love for one another and their love for life. Our time together flew by and I found myself wishing we could keep going. We most likely would have if we were not all freezing in the frigid Minnesota air. The Depot Skating Rink and Mill City Museum area- both in Minneapolis- offered the perfect backdrop for their session. It radiates a sense of vibrancy, and feelings of fun-just like Danielle and Brian.”
